Notes
Venturi (1936) described the colors in the painting as: "Fond gris. Nappe blanc-gris. Plat noir, gris à l'intérieur. Verre gris avec transparences rouges. Deux oiseaux [sic] entre le noir, le brun, le rouge, a demi enveloppés dans une étoffe d'un bleu intense." They are actually two herrings wrapped in blue paper.
